Plan ahead for a happy and healthy Christmas and New Year

The festive season is here and sometimes, no matter how well you prepare, health surprises happen. With a little preparation and by knowing your options, you can make this holiday season not just merry and bright, but healthy and happy too.

So, make a checklist, keep your emergency contacts handy and remember to prioritise self-care. With our simple tips, you’ll be all set to enjoy the festive season whatever comes your way.

Stay well and protect those around you

This time of year, colds, flu, and other bugs such as norovirus are spreading but simple steps like regular handwashing, covering your mouth when coughing, disinfecting surfaces and frequently touched items like door handles, and avoiding close contact with vulnerable family members if you’re feeling unwell, can make all the difference.

If you’re eligible but haven’t yet had your flu, COVID-19 or RSV vaccinations, there’s still time! You can book an appointment now.

It’s also important to remember that Christmas can feel overwhelming for some and lonely for others, so check in on those around you to help ensure everyone stays as well as possible.

Check your medicine cabinet - and don’t forget the indigestion relief!

For minor ailments like a sore throat, cold or tummy upset - rest up, stay hydrated, and use over-the-counter remedies. A well-stocked first aid kit with plasters, painkillers, and other essentials will help you tackle small issues quickly. Drinking alcohol should be done in moderation and it’s not recommended to eat more than you need to but if you do overindulge and are left feeling worse for wear, having those Christmas dinner essentials like indigestion tablets and rehydration salts in your cupboard ready can help - you’ll thank yourself later!

You can give yourself peace of mind by putting any prescription medicine requests in in good time. The NHS App is a convenient way to manage prescriptions, nominate your preferred pharmacy and avoid last-minute panics. Don’t forget to check your local pharmacy’s Christmas and New Year opening hours.

Think Pharmacy First

If you start to feel under the weather, your local pharmacy can offer advice guidance and over the counter medication, as well as treatment if required for seven common conditions without the need to see a GP first (eligibility criteria apply).

Pharmacies will be operating different opening times  over Christmas and New Year but you can check these at  NHS South East pharmacy opening times.
