Diabetes Week (10-16 June)
Diabetes week (10-16 June) is shining a light on what it’s like to live day in, day out with diabetes. It aims to raise awareness of what matters and this year's theme is focussed on asking everyone to remember that ‘your diabetes check-ups matter’
When you have diabetes, you need regular health checks to inform you and your healthcare team how diabetes is affecting your body. These tests help spot signs of any changes early on, so you can get all the help and support you need before an issue arises. Tests may include those which:
- monitor your average blood sugar levels
- check how well your heart and kidneys are working
- check your eyes and feet as these can be affected when you have diabetes
These regular diabetes health checks are vital for helping you to continue to live life to the fullest. It is also important to check in with your GP or practice nurse if you are thinking of starting a family, as they can provide pre-pregnancy advice.
Even if you feel well you should still attend, and if you think you just don’t have the time, get in touch with your practice to request an appointment that fits in with your schedule. This will allow you to have a conversation if you are not sure what checks you should be getting.
If you have Type 2 diabetes and are under 40 you are eligible for additional support, make sure you contact your GP for more information.
