Join the quitters on No Smoking Day
Wednesday, 13th March is the 40th national No Smoking Day.
Since the event was first held, smoking rates in England have fallen by two thirds, yet there are still 5.3 million adults across the country who smoke.
We're supporting the national campaign to urge remaining smokers to quit, for their own good and for that of those close to them.
You’ll be seeing online, print and broadcast promotion of no-smoking messages, highlighting the harms of smoking as well as the hope around quitting, with personal stories from people who are feeling the benefits of giving up.
We hope that any of you who smoke will be able to use this opportunity to quit, or to access the free NHS support that will help you to quit in due course.
We’d also love it if you can share the messages when you see them, on our channels and any others you follow.
Smoking remains the single largest preventable cause of death in England and up to two in three smokers will die as a result of long-term smoking.
Almost every minute of every day someone is admitted to hospital in England with a smoking-related disease and in 2022-23, there were an estimated 400,000 hospital admissions in England due to smoking. Remarkably, one in four hospital patients is a smoker.
As well as the physical cost, there’s also the financial cost: On average, smokers spend £38.59 per week on their habit – which works out as more than £2,000 per year!
Our message to you and to our local population is this: Be part of the change and help build a smokefree generation.
