Those with Long-Term Conditions urged to get their COVID-19 and flu vaccinations this winter

People with long-term health conditions, including liver disease, diabetes, and kidney disease, are being strongly encouraged to take advantage of the free COVID-19 and flu vaccinations available this winter.

As colder weather approaches, we tend to spend more time indoors, where respiratory viruses can spread more easily. If you are eligible for the vaccines, you do not need to wait for an invitation—appointments are available through the national booking service or at local vaccination sites.

It is important to top up your protection, even if you have previously been vaccinated or have had flu or COVID-19, as immunity can decrease over time.

Individuals with long-term conditions are at a higher risk of severe complications from both flu and COVID-19, including an increased risk of mortality. Furthermore, contracting both flu and COVID-19 simultaneously can lead to serious health issues. Topping up your vaccinations can help reduce the severity of symptoms and support a quicker recovery, providing protection throughout the winter months.

Similar to last year, those eligible for the COVID-19 and flu vaccines include:

  • all adults aged 65 years and over
  • residents of care homes for older adults
  • people aged 6 months to 64 years with underlying health conditions
  • frontline health and social care workers
  • pregnant women.

The flu vaccine is also available to children aged 2 to 3 years, school-aged children (Reception to Year 11) and children with certain long-term health conditions. You can find more information about children’s flu vaccines on the NHS website.
