What do my results mean?

There are two types of cholesterol: High Density Lipoprotein (HDL) - known as 'good' cholesterol - and Low Density Lipoprotein (LDL or non-HDL) - known as 'bad' cholesterol.

A cholesterol test can measure:

  • the total cholesterol in your blood
  • your good cholesterol level
  • your bad cholesterol level
  • the level of good cholesterol compared to overall cholesterol

When you get your results you may just be told your total cholesterol level. You may be able to ask for more detailed results.

Whatever your results, the healthcare professional treating you should explain what they mean and what you may need to do.
